ネルソン・マンデラ氏が2013年12月5日に95歳で 亡くなった。南アフリカで初めて民主的に選ばれた大統領で、ノーベル平和賞の受賞者でもあった。マンデラ氏は、 アパルトヘイトとして知られている南アフリカの人種隔離政策に反対する闘争活動のために、27年間を刑務所で過ごした。1990年に刑務所から釈放されると4年後には大統領になったが、1期のみ在任して大統領の座から身を引いた。独裁政権の多いアフリカの政治体制においては希有なことだ。
世界中から愛された政治家であったマンデラ氏は、言葉で人々に印象を与えた。彼の言葉は人々に よって引用されており、その中でも有名な言葉のひとつが、1964年のリヴォニア反逆罪裁判の法廷で彼が理念を貫いた演説からの引用だ。その演説で彼はこう言った。
私は白人による支配に反対し、そして黒人による支配にも反対してきました。全ての人々が協調して平等な機会の下で共に暮らしていく、民主的で自由な社会という理想を大切にしています。この理想に人生を捧げて実現を目指すことができれば最も望ましいですが、必要であれば、この理想のために死をもいといません。
このリヴォニア裁判での演説以外にも、マンデラ氏は生涯を通じて多くの印象的で示唆に富んだ言葉を残した。ツイッターユーザーが彼の訃報を受けて彼の言葉を共有しており、マンデラ氏はこの世を去ってなお、ツイッターユーザーを通して世界に語り続けている。
